Breastfeeding can be extremely hard work. Believe me, I know. Mastitis and other inflammatory conditions of the breast can make it extremely painful. Most women will see their GP for a course of antbiotics when mastitis occurs.

But what do you do when the problem continues, or you can feel a lump in your breast that you think may be a blocked duct?

Most mothers try massage, heat and frequent feeding or expressing as the most commonly recommended treatments. However, these interventions are not always successful, and some of the massage techniques recommended seem to give more pain rather than take it away.

Seeing a Physiotherapist for this condition may not have even crossed your mind. However, treatment with therapeutic ultrasound and specialized forms of massage by physiotherapists who work in women’s health can be beneficial.

Research published last yet has shown that physiotherapy intervention is effective in clearing blocked milk ducts that have not responded to self-clearing techniques.

If you are struggling but don’t want to give up feeding your baby just yet, please feel free to give us a call to chat about your options.
