Hey cross fitters! Do double-unders make you wee?

They shouldn’t.

Do you write it off because you think it’s normal?

It isn’t.

Or because you’ve had children?

Yes, childbirth is a risk factor, but this does not mean you can’t do anything about it.

Or because you are a woman?

Yes, incontinence is more prevalent in women, but this doesn’t mean we should just accept it.

Or because you are working hard when it happens?

Uncontrolled bladder leakage at any time, is not a sign of strength. It is a sign of pelvic floor dysfunction.

It’s called stress urinary incontinence, and despite being very common, it’s not normal and you can stop it.

This has gained some discussion in the media when a video that was produced by the Reebok CrossFit games competition titled ‘do you pee during workouts?’ was put up on Youtube.

This controversial video that aired in 2013 has been heavily criticised for sending the message that urinary leakage during CrossFit is normal, they even have a person who claims to be a gynaecologist stating that it’s ok to urinate while working out. What the?

You might already be doing pelvic floor exercises (also known as kegels), and they are not helping.

But did you know that research has shown that unless you have been taught how to do a pelvic floor contraction by a trained professional conducting an internal pelvic floor examination, that up to 50% of people are doing it incorrectly. And up to approximately 43% will do it in a way that will promote incontinence!

So what should you do about it?

There is help out there, you can access a non-invasive abdominal ultrasound scan or an internal pelvic floor assessment by a trained professional, who can tailor a program for your needs.

The APA states that an Australian study has shown that 85% of women with stress incontinence can be successfully treated by a physiotherapist with a special interest in women’s health.

Even if you are not experiencing any symptoms, but currently do high impact or heavy lifting activities such as cross fit, this is a good opportunity to see where you are currently at, get some education about this issue, and if necessary take some preventative measures.
